A week of active partnership … to prevent Thalassemia and Genetic Blood Diseases

Within awareness-raising efforts of the preventive of the society and participation of the University of Science and Technology, and to play a societal role towards the issue of patients with Thalassemia and genetic blood diseases, the university established during this week its annual awareness and humanitarian program; To support patients and combat these chronic diseases, by holding many awareness-raising and rhetorical events, and a charity bazaar where the students of the Laboratory Department – level 3 and Student Activities Department at the UST – for a whole week – and with the generous participation of the UST leadership, attended by Prof. Adel Al-Mutawakel, President of the University, Prof. Abdullah Al-Mikhlafi, Dean of the College of Medicine, Prof. Mahdi Al-Qarawani. And Prof. Abdul Habib Al-Qubati, Vice Dean of the College of Medicine, Male Section, and Prof. Suzan Al-Harawi, Dean of the Female Section

During these events, a number of speeches were delivered by Dr. Abdullah Al-Mikhlafi. He touched on the roles that the YST plays during its career in the scientific, practical, and social aspects, and what the UST organizes for these events – annually – is only part of the interest in these societal issues .. wishing everyone to adopt the issue of patients with thalassemia and genetic blood diseases and feel the responsibility towards them either through the provision of financial support or awareness-raising efforts in order to prevent from these chronic diseases.

To clarify aspects of these chronic diseases Dr. Mukhtar Ismail Director of Thalassemia and Genetic Blood Disorders Center and Mr. Saleh Al-Osaimi a member of the association’s administrative board. They provided two awareness-raising lectures on these chronic diseases, the transmission methods, the symptoms, complications, and ways to prevent them, by conducting pre-marriage examination and medical advice and choosing a good life partner for the sake of a healthy society that will be free from genetic blood diseases, calling on everyone to advocate for this issue; To transferring awareness from the halls to the community, stressing health, social and psychological support for patients; To overcome the distress of the disease and its complications.

Dean of the College of Female Students, Dr. Suzan Al-Harawi thanked the Society for its continuous efforts in combating these diseases and caring for patients. Calling on the attention of various official bodies related to this important issue, and issuing the necessary legislation; To educate society and the necessity of conducting medical examinations before marriage, and to focus on educating legal secretaries of the danger of ignoring these examinations and these awareness activities were interspersed with various activities that were well received by all.

The Humanitarian Awareness Week concluded today, Thursday, February 25, 2021, with a blood donation campaign for patients with Thalassemia and hereditary blood diseases, in the yard of Administrative Sciences College – at the UST – in coordination and cooperation with our dears / National Center for Blood Transfusion and its researches and under the supervision of its Technical Director, Dr. Adnan Al-Hakimi.
